Spiral puts hands-on engineers on the nation’s test ranges for research and development and for developmental and operational test and evaluation. Our work spans platforms from small unpiloted air systems to supersonic fleet platforms, and our OTIS software is in use at most of the major ranges and test facilities.

What we do

Engineering services for the national test ranges, the OTIS software range engineers use to set up and watch their telemetry, and LEAPS, the aerial surveillance system we designed for our home town.

OTIS telemetry software

The only complete family of software built around the IRIG 106 Chapter 9 TMATS standard. One TMATS file sets up every vendor’s equipment on the range, and the data shows up on screen as it arrives. In use at most of the major ranges and test facilities, and with customers in Australia, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Germany and the United Kingdom.

LEAPS aerial surveillance

The Law Enforcement Aerial Platform System, designed and integrated by Spiral. It pairs airborne sensors with ground-based instrumentation, manned or unmanned, for law enforcement and disaster response. LEAPS began daily surveillance flights from Fox Field for the LA County Sheriff’s Lancaster Station in August 2012.

From TMATS file to live display.

01_Setup :

One TMATS file describes the whole test.

OTIS-9 opens any IRIG 106 Chapter 9 file as plain forms and graphics, checks every link between sections, and saves a valid TMATS file. Reports cover measurement lists, major frames and PCM formats, with calibration curve fitting built in.

02_Translate :

Every vendor’s ground station, from the same file.

Translators turn TMATS into each vendor’s setup format. Bridges bring vendor setups back into TMATS and keep vendor-only commands in comment fields, so the file stays 100% compliant. True vendor independence.

03_Control :

Receivers, combiners and antennas set up with one command.

OTIS Control sets up, monitors and logs receivers, combiners, bit syncs, recorders and antenna controllers, and writes a time-tagged AGC report of azimuth, elevation and AGC for every mission. TENA supported.

04_Display :

See the data as it arrives.

Time history, XY plot, fixed and scrolling tabular, bar graphs and meters, grouped into saved display setups you can recall for the next mission.

Who we are

Spiral started as a one-person operation inside SPARTA, Inc.’s Aerospace Systems Division, grew into its Technical Services Operation, and incorporated in 2000. On 1 January 2007 our employee-owners bought SPARTA’s interest. Today we are an independent, veteran-owned small business in the Antelope Valley.
